Pen Druid Brewing — Sperryville Micro-Brewery Open

A new micro-brewery Pen Druid Brewing has opened in Sperryville. The brewery is owned and operated by the three brothers Lain, Van and Jennings Carney. The name, Pen Druid, comes from their old family farm which sits on the Thornton River in Rappahannock County, Virginia, just a few miles downstream from the brewery. Tasting room hours are Thursday 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Friday/Saturday from 12:00 p.m. till 8:00 p.m.
In the winter 2015/2016 the brothers isolated their own cocktail of wild yeasts and bacteria from the Virginia Piedmont reflecting the terroir of Rappahannock. And in that spirit of capturing the terroir of the Rappahannock Piedmont, the brothers also began their spontaneous fermentation program which employ two copper-lined coolships. That same winter the brothers expanded their production and are now brewing on a 5bbl system, using an oak mash tun and open oak barrel fermenters.
Plan a weekend of fun in the Shenandoah Mountains and stop in to Pen Druid Brewing and try a cold one of many choices. Organize a whole group of your friends and stay in style at either Sun Dancer Lodge or Spirit Dancer Lodge located a few miles down the road adjacent to Old Rag Mountain in the Shenandoah National Park.
